A good friend of mine fixes copiers and printers for a living โ the big office machines, Canon imagePRESS, Toshiba e-STUDIO. His days are error codes, torque specs, and part numbers, and his reference library is a folder of PDFs the manufacturer never intended anyone to read on a phone in a supply closet.
The one that broke the camel's back was a Canon service manual: 2,694 pages, 132 MB. Finding one part number in it meant scrolling, Ctrl+F, forty-seven wrong matches, and ten minutes of a customer watching him read. He'd been texting me those questions instead, because I could sometimes find things faster at a desk. That's not a workflow; that's a friendship being used as a search engine.
So I built him a tool. Upload the manuals once, ask in plain English โ "part number for the fuser drive gear" โ and get the answer with the exact page cited. Tap the citation and the actual manual page opens, diagrams and all, so you can verify with your own eyes before ordering a part. No answer invented from thin air: if the manuals don't cover it, it says so.
The 2,694-page monster was the first real test. It's encrypted, it's enormous, and the fancy document-AI services choked on it. We ended up reading PDFs page-by-page in the browser itself, so a manual of any size gets indexed โ that design decision, forced by one stubborn Canon file, is now why the tool handles whole OEM libraries without blinking.
Then came the text that turned a favor into a product:
He got his pictures. Every citation opens the real page. And "I won't even need the books" became the job description for the whole product: the answer, the part number, and the manual page arrive together, on a phone, in the field.
He's been running his own calls on it since โ photographing nameplates, asking it for error-code remedies, loading his own Toshiba and Xerox manuals without asking us how. That's the bar we care about: a working tech, mid-job, not needing the books.
